And it appears to be adjustable. Could this be used to allow the engineers to finely tune the valve slide&#8217;s travel, by shortening or lengthening the valve rod?<\/p>\n<p>And is it even possible to have a rigid connection here?<\/p>\n<p>Below is a graph of the rocker&#8217;s motion through 45 degrees of travel derived through geometry. Red graph is horizontal projection of the rocker&#8217;s arm, and the blue is the vertical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whiskeybeforebreakfast.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/12\/capture.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-158\" title=\"Capture\" src=\"http:\/\/whiskeybeforebreakfast.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/12\/capture.png?w=600\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ckhollidayplans.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/capture.png 1310w, http:\/\/ckhollidayplans.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/capture-300x192.png 300w, http:\/\/ckhollidayplans.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/capture-1024x654.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the valve slide motion study, the maximum amount that the valve needs to travel, in one direction, to allow full exposure of the steam port is 1.13in.<\/p>\n<p>Using the graph, or directly solving, the rocker will need to rotate, in one direction, 7.84 degrees to allow the valve slide to travel the distance it needs. This also results in a vertical deflection of the rod in amount of 0.077in. That&#8217;s about 6.88% of the rod&#8217;s diameter, or L\/401.<\/p>\n<p>So, it certainly works, as the induced stress on the rod and the rocker is very minimal. But, still, it seems like an unnecessary stress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/whiskeybeforebreakfast.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/12\/12-5-2011-10-01-10-pm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-159\" title=\"12-5-2011 10.01.10 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/whiskeybeforebreakfast.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/12\/12-5-2011-10-01-10-pm.png?w=600\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ckhollidayplans.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/12-5-2011-10-01-10-pm.png 1920w, http:\/\/ckhollidayplans.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/12-5-2011-10-01-10-pm-300x188.png 300w, http:\/\/ckhollidayplans.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/12-5-2011-10-01-10-pm-1024x640.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The computer model needs that rotation degree of freedom to function properly. The above shows that the model is rigid.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, I wanted to do the CK Holliday as it was intended anyway. This will bring the model much closer to the 1955 build.
